Toll

Larry Toll

Dr. Larry Toll is not only a history professor, but he also lives it. In 1982 Toll participated in his first civil war reenactment and was quickly hooked. He currently attends three to five of these events a year, but in years past has attended up to six to ten reenactments a year. A typical re-enactment will last a whole weekend. Each event has at least one main battle and while the participants are not in battle they are demonstrating in their camps. Demonstrations might include period cooking styles, laundry, mock trials, military drill, or even social activities. Camps are set up to look as authentic to the time as possible. Along with the camps the participants also have to have period clothing and weaponry.

Everything from shirts to boots needs to look authentic. Even the guns used in battle are period black powder guns. The overall appearance of the re-enactors and their camps greatly helps the public to fully appreciate this amazing historical experience. Dr. Toll has fought in battles from many time periods. Although he is most often in Civil War battles, he has also fights in other time periods including the Revolutionary War, Mexican War, and the War of 1812. He belongs to a group called Homes Unit. They have portrayed various military units including the Third Missouri and the 24th Missouri. Toll explains that about 80 percent of the time he portrays a soldier but has also played a farmer. One special experience for Toll was when his wife and son joined him in his hobby. The trio portrayed a family during a Moonlight Event at Wilson’s Creek. Toll stressed that Evangel greatly encourages students to participate in re-enactments. Students could have opportunities to travel or even participate in events locally. He suggests that those interested should think about the time periods that are most interested in and would enjoy researching. There are opportunities for men and women of all ages. Evangel will even provide clothing and supplies for your first experience. If you are interested in getting involved with re-enactments contact Dr. Larry Toll for more information.
