As the Intramural basketball season comes to an end, volleyball and soccer begin.
According to Russell Brand, Intramural director, the reason the volleyball season is getting started so late is due to the large number of basketball teams and game cancellations.
“In order to complete a season consisting of more than three or four games, we had to play into April. We also took mid-term week off so students could focus on the mid-term exams. The games scheduled for the week before Easter encountered several campus-related conflicts, and we were forced to cancel games that week,” Brand said.
This year there will be eleven men’s teams and 15 women’s teams participating in intramural volleyball. Kristin Craft, freshman and Lewis Third North (L3N) resident, said, “This is my first year playing Intramurals, and I have really enjoyed it. They are a fun way hang out with your friends and get in a good work out. The girls on my floor are pretty competitive volleyball players, so it will be fun to have some good competition. I only wish that the Intramural volleyball season was longer.”
According to Brand, between the men’s and women’s games, there will be about 30 games per week until the end of the semester. “I didn’t get to play volleyball last year because I hurt my knee, but I am excited for it this year, and I hope L3N wins,” junior Melanie Schmidt said.
According to Brand, the volleyball season will be a tournament style. Rather than playing a normal season, there will be a double-elimination tournament to decide the winner in volleyball.
Brand said that teams will be guaranteed at least two games but could play as many as six based on their performance. “The volleyball tournaments and soccer season will be an excellent way to finish a great Intramural year,” Brand said.
Soccer will be a double elimination tournament for the women and a single elimination tournament for the men.
