Max Schuman, senior, usually starts his day off with an early morning run. After that, he has classes and his work study job at the library for at least an hour or two each day. Schuman is an elementary education/middle school math and social studies major. “Yeah, it’s a mouthful,” Schuman said.
Schuman also has a practicum in a first grade classroom for about three hours a week. After classes, he goes for the second workout of the day where he helps coach Evangel's men's distance team.
Schuman is on the track team and runs the 5,000 and 10,000 meter races, but his main focus this year is the marathon at nationals. “I’m definitely excited for that. I’m just hoping to put my best on display for God,”
Schuman said.
Schuman stays pretty busy with running and schoolwork, but occassionally he will have some down time. Any free time Schuman has is spent playing Modern Warfare 2 or watching ESPN. “These help to relieve the stress that has piled up throughout the day.” Other than that, Schuman doesn’t have time for much else. “Running, class work and friends keep me occupied for the most part,” Schuman said.
Schuman is from Belton which is a suburb of Kansas City, Mo. “It’s not quite [a big city or a small town], but it is becoming more and more like a bigger city every time I go back home.”
He ran cross country and track all throughout high school, as well as his four years in college. “Unfortunately, I do not have great hand-eye coordination. Once I discovered this, I realized running was the only way to go.”
Schuman is a senior, but he has one year left because he transferred to Evangel after two years at Park University in Belton. “It came down to the fact that I wasn’t happy. I wasn’t growing spiritually like I had wanted at my last school, and I felt like I needed a change,”
Schuman said.
Schuman said he had considered Evangel in high school, but felt it was too expensive. “I eventually realized that I shouldn’t let money keep me from going where I felt I should be. I can definitely say that God opened the doors financially when I gave Evangel a second look. I know it sounds cliché, but everything fell into place.” However, he said he does not regret the time he spent at Park because of the things he learned while he was there. “The best decision I ever made was transferring
to Evangel. ”
