What do clown shoes, the Oasis Convention Center and carnival food have in common? The answer: Evangel University’s annual SpringFling. “We are envisioning an atmosphere of a circus or carnival. You can dress up as anything you would see at a circus or carnival. This doesn’t mean you can dress up as a freaky clown, however. If you do, you will have to pay twice as much to get in,” Scott McMaken, Activities Board (AB) President, said.

SpringFling will be held at the Ramada Oasis Hotel and Convention Center April 16. The room will appear to be a big tent, and different carnival booths will be displayed. “We are going to have a contest between each dorm on campus. The dorm that creates the most creative carnival booth and draws the most attention will win a dorm pizza party,” McMaken said.

According to McMaken, SpringFling started in the ’70s as the spring version of HarvestFest. The idea of girls asking guys to SpringFling came from Spinster’s week. “Spinster’s week was a week in the spring when girls asked guys to do things,” McMaken said.

The goal for AB this year is to provide more events for students than just SpringFling. “I believe the purpose of AB is to provide multiple activities on campus for students,” McMaken said. “We are trying to do this so students don’t just have one event like SpringFling and then be bored for the rest of the semester.”

Hope Arnzen, an AB member, said, “I am excited to see everyone’s costumes for SpringFling. People are going to have to think outside the box and get creative so everyone is not running around in clown costumes. The decorations and atmosphere will be awesome.

It is in a new location this semester, so everyone should come expecting something just as great as HarvestFest, if not greater.”
According to McMaken, AB has already been working hard on SpringFling since the beginning of the semester. AB is made up of several different teams that will work on things such as videos, skits and decorations. “Activities Board has met for an hour each week since the beginning of the semester, and after Spring Break we will meet twice a week. A week before SpringFling is when things get really crazy and we meet every night,” McMaken said.

More information about when doors will open and ticket prices will come soon. McMaken said, “I really encourage everyone to come, because this year’s SpringFling is definitely something you won’t want to miss.”
